Hands-On Learning in Pawtucket at the Slater Mill

November 14, 2013

In early October, one of Cardinal Cushing Centers’ high school classes had the opportunity to SlaterHouse1experience the IndustrialSlaterHouse3 Revolution first hand.  On a field trip to the Slater Mill Historic Site in Pawtucket, RI, students visited three eighteenth century buildings and learned about life in a textile town.  Guides were dressed in period clothing and gave a tour of the first water powered mill used to produce cotton, an artisan’s home where students saw tools used for hand-spinning, the way fabric was produced prior to the Industrial Revolution and a working wooden water wheel used for machinery.

SlaterHouse2“Our visit to Slater Mill was a wonderful way for the students to see our lessons on the Industrial Revolution come to life,” states Tammy Hall, the classroom teacher. “We look forward to future opportunities to take our students off campus and experience more of what this historic region has to offer.”
